Study: Head Injuries Accelerate Aging Of The Brain

A new study that was conducted by researchers at the University of Michigan has concluded that injuries to the head and brain actually speed up the aging process of the brain. The researchers from the School of Kinesiology found evidence of unnatural aging after the brain had suffered injury, including concussion and head impacts.

The team discovered that injury to the brain caused a loss of brain communication and brain functions deteriorated much faster compared to a brain that hadn’t suffered an injury. [Read more...]

Super Fuel Efficient Vehicle Unveiled At University Of Michigan

A student engineering team has unveiled their efforts of creating an extremely fuel efficient vehicle. The team are entering into the 2012 SAE International Supermileage Challenge on the 7-8th of June. The aim of the challenge it to construct a vehicle that can huge distances without using much fuel. The current record is 3,169 miles per gallon.

The University of Michigan team’s one-person vehicle uses a modified lawnmower engine as its source of power. They had to design a drivetrain that could take the motion produced by the engine and transmit it to the wheels in the most efficient way possible. The cam shaft, valve timing and piston also had to be modified. University officials say they are proud of their students efforts. [Read more...]

Facebook Page Created For Missing Student

Friends of missing university student, 21 year old Brice Moss, have launched a Facebook page in an attempt to gain information about his disappearance. Moss’s mother thought he was due to attend a commencement ceremony at the University of Michigan on Saturday, but didn’t turn up. However, the school reports that Moss hasn’t been a student at the school for some time, more than a year in fact. He hasn’t been seen since.

Authorities have said they have no reason to believe Moss is in any danger, but his mother said it is strange that he didn’t tell her where he was going. [Read more...]

University of Michigan Scientists Developing Hi-Tech Pacemaker

Pacemakers are lifesaving devices that are implanted inside the chests of patients with a number of heart related ailments. Their job is to keep the heart beating at a steady pace when the patients own body can’t. However, pacemakers require a battery to work, which means patients require another operation to replace the battery after about five to ten years.

Engineering scientists at the University of Michigan have been working on a pacemaker that uses vibrations from the patients own heartbeat to power the device. The technology could also be used to power implanted defibrillators. [Read more...]

President Age Limit Reviewed By University Of Michigan

University of Michigan officials are seeking to abolish the age limit of its presidents. At the moment presidents and other school executives must retire when they reach the age of 70. The current president, Mary Sue Coleman, is 68 years of age and therefore, due to university policy, must retire in the academic year she will turn 70, which will be July in the 2013 – 2014 fiscal year. University Of Michigan Has Plans To Expand To Wayne County

Plans to expand their medical services into Wayne County are being made by the University of Michigan Health System. The University wants to go ahead with a 25 year lease for a building, which measures about 100,000 square feet and is located in Livonia. $25 Million Music Collection Kept In University Storage Room

A huge collection of antique musical equipment worth $25 million is just sitting in a storage room belonging to the University of Michigan. The Stearns collection, which includes the famous Moog synthesizer and a rare harp piano, was donated to the school about 100 years ago with the understanding that the pieces would be exhibited. University Of Michigan Introduces Master Of Health Informatics

Starting in the Fall of 2012 the University of Michigan will begin to offer a Master of Health Informatics program. The new program will be the first of its kind in the state. The School of Public Health and the School of Information are both responsible for providing the master’s program, which focuses quite a lot on consumer health informatics and leadership.

It is estimated that an extra 6,000 professionals within the informatics sector will be required by 2014, according to statistics from the US Bureau of Labor. They project that by 2016 the employment level for health informatics will grow by 16 percent. [Read more...]

New Diabetes Test Measures Glucose Levels In Tears

A long awaited alternative diabetes test has been developed by scientists at the University of Michigan. The only test currently available involves diabetes sufferers pricking their skin to get a glucose level reading from their blood. Many individuals refrain from using this method as regularly as they should because of the pain involved. The new test doesn’t use blood as the test material, it uses tears. Rare Chinese Art Collection Found At University Of Michigan

A total of 15 pieces of rare Chinese artwork have been discovered in a storage room at the University of Michigan. The pieces include images of Mao Zedong, a late Chinese leader, and Red Guards stamping on a Buddhist statue and burning books.
