Bear Tranquillized On University Campus

A large male black bear weighing about 200 pounds has had to be tranquillized when it climbed a tree in the University of Colorado in Boulder. The bear was reported to have been wondering around near the campus residence halls before it decided to climb the tree. Python Blood Could Hold The Key To Heart Disease Treatment

Researchers from the University of Colorado have conducted studies into whether the fatty acids found in the blood of pythons could, some day, be used as an effective treatment against heart disease. Python’s blood was tested on because the snake’s heart actually grows by 40 percent after it feeds and also the amount of triglycerides found in the animal’s blood increases to about 50 times the normal level. Gut Bacteria Could Be Responsible For Obesity

Rob Knight, a bacteria expert at the University of Colorado, thinks that bacteria found in the stomach could be responsible for the urge to eat more than is required. Knight has studied the bacteria found in obese people and discovered that it is different to that found in an average weight person. The bacteria found in obese people seem to ‘digest’ more energy and be ‘more hungry’, which could be one reason for the urges to eat more than average. [Read more...]

Students wishing attend the University of Colorado will be required to complete an online alcohol course before the start of the new fall semester. The course is compulsory and is designed to teach students the dangers of alcohol abuse. The University of Colorado Approves Salary Pool

Regents at the University of Colorado have voted in a new salary pool which could reward employees with a pay raise of up to three percent. The new merit based salary pool will be funded by tuition revenue. Officials explained that faculty members have not seen a salary increase for about 35 months and this has made it difficult when employing new staff and also to retain the high quality members they already have. Student Diversity Director Quits Because of Sexist Blog Posts

The University of Colorado’s student diversity director, Matthew Cucchiaro, has resigned after he was found to be posting comments on his blog, which were sexist towards women. One post was titled ‘women are not as smart as men’. In his defence, Cucchiaro said that the comments were supposed to be satirical and not to be taken seriously as his perception of women. He is said to have posted the items before he was elected as diversity director, but now, after he has resigned, has started to post again. [Read more...]
