Seton Hall University To Give Nokia Lumia 900 To Every Freshman

Seton Hall in New Jersey is offering a free Nokia Lumia 900 cell phone to all freshmen starting this September. The move is aimed at meeting the school’s mission of providing its students with state of the art technology to improve their experience at the school.

Seton Hall University already offers students the use of the SHUmobile application, which allows users to access useful school information by way of news feeds and maps. Something that new students will find easier with their new phone. [Read more...]

Rats Could Be Trained To Find Land Mines

Two professors from Bucknell University are in the process of training rats to sniff out land mines. Biomedical and electrical engineering professor, Joe Tranguillo and Kevin Myers, a psychology professor, are training the rats to wear a small backpack and use their highly sensitive sense of smell to track down land mines.

When the rat discovers a mine it turns in circles. The movement triggers a motion sensor in the rat’s backpack and a wireless transmitter pinpoints the exact location. The rats are trained to perceive a small vibration from the device that is attached to them as a reward when they are successful. [Read more...]

Six Shot At University Apartment Complex

Six people were shot on Saturday after a fight broke out between two men while at a pool party in the University Heights apartment block. Three of the victims have died. The complex is an off-campus housing facility for Auburn University in Alabama. Two of the individuals who were shot dead during the incident have been named as Ed Christian and Ladarious Phillips, former football players at the university. The third man shot dead is Demario Pitts.

According to witnesses, the fight was started over a woman and two of the men punched the other two. The pair who had been hit then took out guns and began shooting. [Read more...]

Professor To Use Supercomputer To Improve Earthquake Warning Time

A professor at the University of Wyoming plans to use the school’s supercomputer to draw up a detailed model of what happens underground in the moments leading up to a serious earthquake. Po Chen believes that by researching into the seismic activity that occurs just before an earthquake happens, scientists may be able to design a better warning system that could add minutes on the amount of time people have before the quake actually hits. Three Students Robbed Whilst Swimming

Three female students, aged between 19 and 22, were robbed and one sexually assaulted whilst swimming in a University of Maryland, College Park water fountain. The trio stripped to their underwear before jumping into the fountain. At about midnight on Friday a group of 10 individuals approached the students. One of the group reportedly grabbed one of the student’s buttocks before taking their belongings and running off. [Read more...]

University Of Kentucky To Cut 140 Jobs

Officials at the University of Kentucky have announced they plan to cut 140 full-time and part-time jobs at the campus. The cuts have been made necessary because of huge reductions in the school’s funding recently. A further 164 vacant positions are also going to be cut. The lay-off’s will affect approximately one percent of the university’s staff. [Read more...]

Princeton Gives Honorary Degree To Aretha Franklin

Aretha Franklin stepped up to receive an honorary degree in music from Princeton University yesterday. This is the second time within a two year period the popular singer has received an honorary degree from an Ivy League university. In 2010 Franklin was given another degree by Yale University.

The singer was amongst another 2,000 students who were graduating from the university. Five of those were also receiving honorary degrees, including 81-year-old former coach of the Princeton basketball team, Pete Carril. [Read more...]

Officials Determine OU Student’s Death Was An Accident

The medical examiner’s office has come to the opinion that the death of a University of Oklahoma student, 22-year-old Casey Cooke, was a result of an accident. Cooke was found unresponsive on Sunday morning near Evans Hall. Dispite their best efforts, paramedics were unable to revive her.

It is believed that Cooke was trying to climb up to the roof via a fire escape when she fell. Suicide has been ruled out by the local authorities. [Read more...]

Sho Yano Becomes Youngest Student To Earn MD

Sho Yano, a 21 year old student from the University of Chicago, is the youngest student to ever receive a medical degree. Yano has always been somewhat of a prodigy. He was composing his own music at the age of five and actually started his college life at the age of nine. Three years later, when he was twelve, he graduated summa cum laude from Loyola University.

Yano then went on to enrol in the Pritzker School of Medicine, where he graduated from on Saturday. [Read more...]

Super Fuel Efficient Vehicle Unveiled At University Of Michigan

A student engineering team has unveiled their efforts of creating an extremely fuel efficient vehicle. The team are entering into the 2012 SAE International Supermileage Challenge on the 7-8th of June. The aim of the challenge it to construct a vehicle that can huge distances without using much fuel. The current record is 3,169 miles per gallon.

The University of Michigan team’s one-person vehicle uses a modified lawnmower engine as its source of power. They had to design a drivetrain that could take the motion produced by the engine and transmit it to the wheels in the most efficient way possible. The cam shaft, valve timing and piston also had to be modified. University officials say they are proud of their students efforts. [Read more...]
