Online Engineering Degrees

For many professionals looking to secure a lasting career, employment in the engineering field can be a positive move with excellent benefits. However, in order to break into the engineering field, a bachelor’s degree or higher in engineering is needed. An engineering degree will equip students with the skills they need to maintain a successful career in the engineering market, possibly working in new product manufacture, nanotechnology, or environmental solutions. An online engineering degree gives students the same knowledge and qualifications, but simply allows people to complete the degree on their own time, ensuring that people get the most out of their courses. There are six main areas that make up an engineering degree, and students will take courses in the specialty they choose. The areas are chemical engineering, civil engineering, electrical engineering, industrial engineering, materials science engineering, and mechanical engineering.

Courses and Degree Levels

The range of online engineering degrees available is anywhere from an associate’s degree all the way to a doctorate degree. Most students looking for a job in the engineering field will find that they need at least a bachelor’s degree for entry-level work, or a master’s degree in a certain specialty if they wish to work at a higher level. Because the engineering field has such a wide range of specialties, the courses will truly depend on the specific field that a student has chosen. Some of the core classes that will be taken are liberal arts and science courses, which lay the foundation for further study. After the first two years of core classes, the student will then spend the next two years taking classes that are particular to their field of engineering. If a student then decides to pursue further education, the two-year master’s program will offer classes on an even more specific level.

Job Outlook

Because the field of engineering is so broad, the job opportunities are quite endless. Depending upon the students chosen field of engineering, the competition could be a little higher than other areas. However, for students with an online engineering degree, the job market is quite promising, with a lot of potential for growth and advancement throughout a company.  The salary will depend upon the field a student is involved in, as well as the amount of education a student has in that particular field. Another strong salary indicator is the amount of work experience a professional has in a particular field—which is promising for those students hoping to have a long and prosperous career in engineering.
